Life in the Orkney Islands
All around the coast of the United Kingdom are islands which seem to belong to it naturally and geographically; which, at one time or another, have become politically identified with mainland Britain, but which still preserve differences in atmosphere, personality, and institutions. Beyond the mountains and moors of Northern Scotland, separated from it by fierce tideways where Atlantic and North Sea meet, are Orkney and Shetland.
The Visual Arts Award Chick received from the Greater London Arts Association (GLAA) in 1976 was used to complete a photographic documentation of one of these island groups, Orkney. At the time of presenting the body of work created, Chick wrote that 'up to [then], Orkney [had] managed to take it is place in the modern world – in respect of its own natural resources and in its assimilation into its social and domestic life of the modern amenities it can best use – without losing too many of the customs and traditions which give it a special character and ethos. This project was an attempt to record photographically Orkney’s peculiarly satisfying kind of life.'
Chick hoped to publish a book of these photographs entitled Life in the Orkney Islands, which happened with the aid of Paul Harris Publishing in 1979.
